Book Review #11: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict

 ★★★★☆

The field manual I wish someone had handed me before my first church conflict
This is not a book written from a distance. Ted Manby has been in the fight, and it shows on every page. Twenty years of pastoral ministry across multiple congregations, including ones with histories of terminating pastors, gives him a credibility that no amount of seminary theory can substitute for. When he describes the specific tactics of church antagonists, the isolation of a pastor under attack, and the institutional failures that leave hurting leaders abandoned, he's not speculating. He's remembering. The book's greatest strength is its honesty about how bad things can actually get. Manby doesn't sugarcoat the reality that some people in the pew are not simply difficult but are actively destructive, and he draws a clear, useful line between reasonable conflict that helps a church grow and the kind of antagonism that is designed to destroy a pastor's ministry and family. The diagnostic questions in Chapter 4 alone are worth the price of the book, giving leaders a practical framework for identifying what they're dealing with before it's too late. The chapter on personal experiences is raw and specific enough to feel like a conversation rather than a lecture. You can sense the years it took to process those wounds and the hard-won wisdom that came from them. The acknowledgment of his own bitterness and blind spots keeps the book from ever feeling self-righteous. What sets this apart from other church conflict resources is the practical machinery. The DOM policy proposal in the appendix, the steps of church discipline, the section on how associational leaders often fail the pastors they're supposed to protect, these are the specific, actionable pieces that most books in this space avoid because they're politically uncomfortable. Manby goes there anyway. The biblical survey of antagonistic figures is thorough and well-organized, connecting each example to a principle that applies directly to modern church dynamics. The repeated emphasis on courage as the essential virtue, not just spiritual maturity but actual bravery in the face of personal attack, is refreshing and necessary. If I have a criticism, Chapter 11 carries an enormous amount of weight at over fifty pages and could benefit from being broken into smaller, more focused sections. Some of the theological exposition in Chapter 6 restates foundational gospel truths at length that the target audience likely already holds, and tightening it would keep the book's momentum. The writing is functional rather than literary, but for a practical guide, that serves the material well. I would put this book in the hands of every seminary student, every pastor about to candidate at a new church, and every denominational leader who has ever told a hurting pastor to "just pray about it" instead of standing beside him. It fills a gap in the pastoral training pipeline that has left too many good men blindsided and broken.

Book Review #10: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict

August 9, 2026. A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict is a practical and encouraging resource for pastors who find themselves navigating difficult people, opposition, and conflict within the church. Ted D. Manby combines biblical examples, personal experiences, and practical guidance to help church leaders respond to challenging situations with wisdom, courage, and perseverance. What I appreciated most is the book’s emphasis on standing firm in God’s Word while remaining focused on the mission of caring for God’s people. It offers pastors reassurance that they are not alone when facing difficult seasons of ministry. Overall, this is a thoughtful and timely guide that encourages pastors to remain faithful, courageous, and positive even when ministry becomes challenging. A worthwhile read for pastors and church leaders.

A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict. Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2026.

This was a fantastic book through and through. Even though I do not believe in God myself, I felt that reading this book was a transformative experience. I specifically like how the author defines the term “antagonists” which framed the way I thought of conflict differently. I would recommend this book to everybody, even if you don’t agree with everything the author says, I still feel that everyone would gain from giving this book a read.

Book Review #8: A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict

A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict. Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2026.

As a pastor's wife of over 25 years, I have an appreciation for a book that deals with church conflict. God's heart is for unity within the body, and being able to deal with conflict in a healthy and loving way is essential for kingdom growth. Mr. Manby's book offers clear definitions, strategies, and Biblical evidence for ensuring conflict in the church is handled in a mature and God-honoring way. This is a reference book that a pastor is sure to visit again and again as antagonists, conflicts, and attacks arise in the church. I also truly appreciated his personal vulnerability, situational examples, and easy-to-read communication style. Every pastor should have a copy on hand!

Book Review #7: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict

First distinguish and discern the real origin of the threat to the pastor and the church

Having been a lay church elder, I know of very few pastors who live through what Ted Manby highlights as targeted attacks on pastors within the church by “antagonists” and share their all too often-painful experiences and grieving. Even fewer do the in-depth research of what happened to them and why. Ted Manby takes the challenge further to extrapolate the biblical and practical principles for how to prepare for and handle such attacks.

As an executive change and conflict management consultant for over 50 years, I agree with Ted Manby as he hones in on the key here, which is too often missed. First distinguish and discern the real origin of the threat to the pastor and the church. Specifically, does the church conflict come from unhealthy “antagonists” or members with reasonable concerns or external challengers just trying to help. The biblical and practical responses to such church conflicts are quite different!

Ted Manby first defines and explains the relevant terms, like “antagonists,” shares his and others painful experiences, and notes relevant contemporary frameworks. He then analyzes the dramatic impacts and implications for both pastors and the local church. The heart of this book are extensive and powerful Biblical examples, imperatives, along with the positive perspective and courage needed to cope with and handle the requisite personal and corporate fear and discouragement. Finally, in the final chapters, the principles and advice for all those involved meaningfully tie this book together.

Book Review #6: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict

Helpful and Practical for Anyone Dealing With Church Conflict. Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2026. I really appreciated the approach this book takes to church conflict because this is something that can affect not only pastors and leaders, but the entire church body. What stood out to me was the importance of recognizing conflict early instead of allowing problems to grow and eventually cause division. I also liked that the book approaches conflict from a biblical and spiritual perspective while still dealing with the practical realities leaders face when working with different personalities and difficult situations. It gave me several things to think about concerning leadership, communication, unity, and how conflict should be handled within the church. I would recommend this to pastors, ministry leaders, and even church members who want a better understanding of how to respond when conflict arises.

Book Review #5: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict

Know and Deal With Thy Enemy.  Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2026

I chose this book, "A Pastor's Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict," to gain some insight into how to deal with fellow members of a local political group. I have been both puzzled and dismayed at their actions, as they are dividing the group and greatly interfering with the positive impact we can have in the community. While the book obviously comes at the topic of antagonists within a religious framework, I firmly believe Rev. Manby's advice can be applied to many fields of employment. He stresses the importance of communication and finding "win-win" solutions, addressing personal attacks privately at first, being aware of antagonistic behavior (chapter 4) and addressing it quickly. He also offers excellent advice on overcoming this type of behavior, whether through your faith, with the assistance of others, with music and humor, and/or by giving yourself time to heal spiritually, mentally and/or physically. "A Pastor's Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict" is very well-written and organized. Despite the heavy topic, it is an easy read. I especially appreciated the inclusion of the author's personal experiences as a pastor and was very dismayed to read that in the US in 2008, 1500 pastors left their positions EACH month and nearly half of those people left the ministry for another occupation. Sadly, this echoes the job-turnover in education, where 50% of new teachers have quit the profession by their fifth year. I speak from personal experience that adult-to-adult bullying is rampant in public education. Obviously, something needs to be done to quickly and effectively deal with antagonists. This book, "A Pastor's Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict," offers a lot of very sage advice on how to accomplish that. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Book Review #4: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict

A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict. Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2026

I am not a pastor, but I grew up as the daughter of a pastor and have seen first-hand many of the conflicts mentioned throughout this book. I did find that this book was very enlightening still about the struggles pastors and church leadership often go through shepherding their congregations. Rev. Manby manages to combine personal stories with biblical precedent on how to address a multitude of conflicts small and large churches alike face today. I do believe this particular guide is through the lens of a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) perspective; however, I still think pastors across denominations will find valuable biblical information throughout this guide. I highly encourage anyone in church leadership to give this guide a read-through. I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review is completely voluntary, and all opinions in this review are entirely my own.

A good book for church leadership

★★★★☆
A Pastor's Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict is a practical, thoughtful, and biblically grounded resource for pastors, church leaders, and ministry teams navigating difficult situations within the church. The author combines biblical principles with real-life ministry experience, making the advice both relatable and actionable. Rather than offering quick fixes, the book encourages wisdom, patience, discernment, and Christ-centered leadership when dealing with conflict and antagonistic individuals. The personal examples help reinforce the lessons, and the writing remains accessible without losing depth. A worthwhile read for anyone serving in church leadership.

Book Review, #1: A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict

Ted D. Manby’s A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict provides practical, biblically grounded advice for handling one of the most difficult aspects of ministry. I especially appreciated the sections explaining the common causes of conflict within a congregation and the emphasis on addressing disagreements with humility, clear communication, forgiveness, and biblical wisdom instead of allowing bitterness to grow. Rather than simply identifying problems, the author offers realistic strategies that pastors and church leaders can apply to restore relationships and strengthen their churches.

This book mattered to me because it reminded me that conflict is not a sign of failure but an opportunity for spiritual growth when handled with grace and wisdom. The author’s balanced approach encouraged me to think about how patience, prayer, and servant leadership can help preserve unity even during challenging situations. I also liked that the advice was practical enough to be useful in everyday ministry while remaining firmly rooted in Scripture. I would recommend this book to pastors, ministry leaders, church elders, Bible college students, and anyone serving in church leadership who wants to better understand the causes of conflict and learn healthy ways to serve.

I received a free copy of this book and compensation for my time in exchange for an honest review. Laurie

Press Release: A Pastor's Guide to Understanding & Overcoming Church Conflict

A PASTOR’S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING AND OVERCOMING CHURCH CONFLICT ADDRESSES A CRITICAL MINISTRY CHALLENGE                                                                 Ted D. Manby offers pastors practical biblical guidance for navigating church conflict with wisdom, resilience, and lasting ministry effectiveness.

New York, NY July 26, 2026 ─ Author Ted D. Manby presents A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict, a practical Christian ministry resource that examines one of the most challenging realities facing church leaders today. Drawing attention to the complexities of conflict within congregations, the book provides thoughtful guidance for pastors seeking to lead faithfully while maintaining spiritual health, emotional resilience, and a positive outlook during seasons of ministry pressure.

A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict explores essential questions surrounding healthy and unhealthy conflict in the local church. The book examines how pastors can distinguish constructive disagreement from destructive opposition, respond wisely to both reasonable and unreasonable individuals, and address antagonistic behavior without losing sight of their calling. Grounded in biblical principles and practical application, it encourages balanced leadership that values both truth and compassion.

The inspiration for the book comes from the recognition that conflict is an unavoidable part of pastoral ministry, yet many church leaders receive limited preparation for navigating its challenges. Manby seeks to provide pastors with practical tools that can help them evaluate difficult situations, maintain a healthy perspective, and remain committed to serving their congregations even when facing criticism, misunderstanding, or personal attacks.

Beyond addressing conflict itself, the book emphasizes the importance of spiritual endurance and personal well-being. It highlights attitudes and responses that can help pastors remain faithful under pressure while avoiding discouragement and burnout. By encouraging leaders to seek wisdom, support, and biblical perspective, the book demonstrates that periods of conflict can become opportunities for growth, stronger leadership, and deeper dependence on God rather than obstacles that define a ministry.

The book is written for pastors, ministry leaders, seminary students, church elders, denominational leaders, and anyone serving in Christian leadership who desires practical insight into handling difficult situations within the church. Readers will find guidance for evaluating conflict, strengthening relationships, and responding with integrity when ministry becomes especially demanding. Its balanced approach makes it a valuable resource for both experienced pastors and those preparing for future leadership roles.

Ted D. Manby brings a deep commitment to Christian ministry and pastoral leadership through his thoughtful examination of challenges that affect churches and their leaders. His writing reflects a desire to equip pastors with practical, biblically grounded resources that strengthen their calling and encourage faithful service, resilience, and longevity. With A Pastor’s Guide to Understanding and Overcoming Church Conflict, Manby offers an accessible resource designed to help ministry leaders navigate conflict with wisdom, confidence, biblical courage, and enduring hope.
